My favorite Christmas seaon cookies since forerver.

Difficulty: Easy.
Prep time: 60 minutes.
Cook time: 8 minutes.
Servings: 24 cookies.

Before You Begin

The prep time for just the dough is only about 10 minutes, but the cutting and decoration takes a while, especially if you cut shapes with cookie cutters. But it is a fun annual activity to see who can make the least ugly cookie.

Ingredients

  • 227 grams (1 cup) Softened unsalted Butter, or Shortening.
  • 100 grams (1/2 cup) Granulated Sugar.
  • 281 grams (2 1/4 cups) All-purpose Flour.
  • 1.42 grams (1/4 tsp) Salt.
  • 50.0 grams (1 whole) Egg, lightlly beaten.
  • 5 ml (1 tsp) Almond Extract.
  • 5 ml (1 tsp) Vanilla Extract (optional).
  • 30 ml (2 tbsp) Water.
  • Food Coloring. Red and green are nice.
  • 50 grams (1/4 cup) Optional decorations such as colored sprinkles or stars.

Preparation

  1. Cream together softened Butter and Sugar, mixing for 3 to 4 minutes.
  2. Combine Flour, Egg, Salt, Almond Extract, optional Vanilla Extract, and Water.
  3. Divide into batches, one for each color, and mix in Food Coloring. You can also have a plain-colored batch if you're adding decorations.
  4. You should now squeeze out cute little raw cookies using a cookie press. We don't have a press, so we cut shapes using cookie cutters to make Santa Clauses, Christmas trees, stars, and many others. However, if you are going to do this, flatten the dough and chill it before cutting, otherwise the dough will be very sticky and will be very difficult to work with.
  5. Apply optional decorations.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 200 °C (400 °F) for 5 to 8 minutes, depending on the size.
  7. Cool on a wire rack.

Storage
